Building Your Own Career Path: How MiTek Created an Immersive Training Experience at Q Center

With the goal to help professionals looking for a career change start their own dental equipment repair business, MiTek’s challenge could only be resolved with a commotion-free environment that allowed them to work on their own schedule in one central location. Read all about what their co-owner and planner, Kara from MiTek Dental Equipment Repair, has to say about why they picked Q Center and their experience throughout their event process.

Tell us a little bit about your event and the objectives you hoped to achieve for your group.

“MiTek strictly started as a repair service for dental offices in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin with equipment sales nationwide. About a year ago, we realized that there was a whole market of people that wanted a career change and were just lacking the resources to make that switch into dental equipment repair. So, what we really wanted to provide for our trainees was a space where they could learn hands-on how to repair the equipment, and how to market themselves to build a business in this industry.”

What factors were important to MiTek when looking for a new location?

“When we wanted to expand our business for training back in 2017, we had a vision of what we wanted to accomplish but didn’t know the best way to execute that vision. We knew that we needed a concentrated space for about two weeks where we could have our one-on-one training. Because we travel with the equipment that you would find in a dentist’s office, we didn’t want to have to worry about moving it from room to room for the two weeks of training. This equipment is very heavy and requires a lot of electricity. So, finding a location in the Chicago area near our headquarters that could house that equipment and provide those resources for the entire two weeks was really important to us.”

During the search process, what made Q Center stand out to you and your leadership team?

Because we were just starting out, it was hard to find a rental space close to us in our budget. So, we started to look at some different hospitality locations in the area. We actually heard from an employee about Q Center. We came on-site not knowing what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Working with Melody from day one, we noticed that she saw our vision and was able to work with our Q Center planner, Ron, on how to make our training a success.

They were both incredibly accommodating and were willing to change the package to fit our specific needs. The whole process was truly customized and special.”

What did you love about Q Center for your events?

“We really loved that the property was all-inclusive. Having everything from the training space, to the dining and accommodations, made it so much easier not just for our trainees, but also for us. It took away the hassle of needing to find a place to stay that was close to our training space, finding a room that we could stay in consecutively for two weeks and making arrangements for meals each day. Plus, pricing was incredibly easy to explain to our trainees as one flat-rate fee with no additional charges. That way there were no surprises when receiving the bill.

A lot of our trainees also really enjoyed certain amenities like free laundry and fitness center, but also enjoyed the freedom that they had during the training program to work on their own time. Our training style requires Tim, our trainer and founder, to purposely create problems with the dental equipment to create a real-life experience for our trainees. They then need to figure out what is wrong with the machinery and fix it. This can sometimes take a long time and we have found that a lot of our trainees liked to work on their own time sometimes late into the night or early in the morning. Because of this, we were able to get personalized keys made for each of our trainees to get into the rooms so they could work by themselves apart from the training so that they could really absorb all of the information. Not only did this allow our trainees to work at their leisure, but it also gave us a sense of security knowing that only the people involved in our program could get into the room."

What factors were key in your decision to host your training at Q Center?

“The accommodations were key for our group because we have such a unique business. There are not a lot of places that will allow only two to three people to rent out a large space for two weeks, let alone bring in a bunch of dental equipment. Q Center was also able to provide us with a professional environment that created a distraction-free zone.

Because we have had multiple trainings held at Q Center, there is a good understanding between us and the Q Center staff regarding what needs to be done in order to make our trainings a success. They always seem to anticipate our needs before we even get there.”

What goals did you hope to achieve for the group during your time at Q Center?

“We want to make sure that our trainees feel prepared to start their own dental equipment repair company when they are done with their training. Q Center offers a good learning environment where they can be hands-on with their work in an on-going and commotion-free space. Since we are helping professionals start their own dental equipment repair company, it is really important for us to create a space where our trainees can learn in a professional environment. Q Center was able to offer that to us and our trainees.”
